Pauline Birch collection on Nathaniel Ford [manuscripts] 1953.

Collection includes materials on Nathaniel Ford and his family, including a typescript copy and carbon copy of an article titled "Pioneer Nathaniel Ford and the negro family," authored by Pauline Birch; xerox copy and carbon copy of an affidavit, Linn County, Oregon, listing the vital records (births, marriages, deaths) of the Ford family from the family Bible; and a letter accompanying the collection with the author's explanation for writing the article, 1953 Jan. 16. Birch's intent is to display the relationship between Nathaniel Ford and Scott, the African American man that he brought with him to Oregon Territory, who was a slave when they set out from Missouri, but was freed under Oregon Territory laws two years after their arrival. Birch attests that contrary to popular opinion, the familes of Scott and of Nathaniel Ford were friendly with one another.
